This blog is about how a late bloomer-finally takes a stab at some of her personal dreams.
Let's start with Dream #1 - JOINING THE PEACE CORPS. Status: Actively serving as a PCV in the Republic of Azerbaijan.
But it doesn't stop there...
My third and ultimately final dedication to Black History Month highlights vegan chef Bryant Terry.
Why I like him: He turns the stereotyped soul food diet on it's head. ?Greens? Absolutely-but not sauteed in pig flesh.
Bryant Terry
African American are normally pegged for having some of the most unhealthy, albeit satisfying, diets of all cultures. It appears that we would practically eat anything from high resolution colored Cheetohs to the tail end of an Ox. Then comes along a vegan chef, food justice activist, and a Food & Society Fellow Bryant Terry. Originally from Memphis Tennessee and a graduate of Xavier University of Louisiana, Terry moved to New York and spread like butter enrolling in a chef training program offered by the National Gourmet Institute for Health and Culinary Arts. Then he founded the B-Healthy initiative to empower and educate youth about what they put in their mouth, where it comes from, and why they are responsible for caring for the system that produces it.He's ahead of the game in our community as many of us are outliers when it comes to access to fresh fruits and vegetables. He's also giving way to the other face of vegan which is important because we all know that image is everything. Normally black and vegan meant soul powered-dred loc'd-oils and musks. Talk about a society as a whole being a mis-fit and the effects of harvesting ideas paired with strategic planning and all of a sudden Whole Foods is the place to shop because Sonja's House of Nefertiti doesn't quite scream inclusiveness: But I promise you-they both offer the same thing and only one of them will do right by your money. Anyhow, Chef Bryant Terry is vegan and proud and I thank him for his endless contribution to the Black/Brown community. It's also nice to know that he's got a real good handle on quinoa (but I'm still not a fan of it).
